“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” ~ Hebrews 13:8
We used to have this thing in Third Day called the Five Minute Rule. You’ve probably heard about the Five Second Rule. This was a little different. When we were kicking around ideas for the band, we always reserved the right to change our mind within five minutes. This was freeing, because we felt like we could say whatever was on our minds without being held to it later.
Forget about five minutes. What about five years? How much have you changed since then? If you’re like me, you’ve changed for the better in some ways – maybe your taste in food or music or clothes has become more refined. And hopefully we’ve all matured a bit. But in other ways it’s gotten worse. More gray hairs, more wrinkles, and more things to be worried about.
Thankfully, God doesn’t change. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That means that he didn’t just speak to prophets and apostles in biblical times – he still speaks today. It means that the same power that created the universe and the same power that made Jesus rise again is still working in the world today.
Most of all, it means that all the promises he made: to never leave us, never forsake us; to give us a hope and a future; and that he would give us eternal, abundant life. All of those promises are still true today. As Dan DeHaan said in Intercepted by Christ, “If he forgave me before, he forgives me now!”
It is very freeing and comforting to live life under the rule of an unchanging God. His power is unchanging. His forgiveness is unchanging. HIs promises are unchanging. And most of all, his love is unchanging.
Unchanging. Yesterday, today, and forever.
