“This is the new covenant I will make with my people on that day, says the LORD: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” ~ Hebrews 10:16

This time of year, everyone is thinking about resolutions. It’s a new year, so we’re going to hit the ground running with a new resolve. We’re going to grit our teeth and by sheer force of will, this is the year we’re finally going to meet those goals.

But deep down, we’re the same people we were last year. We know we’re not doing anything different than we’ve always done. And in a few weeks, we’ll be right back where we started, wondering what happened.

Maybe instead of a resolution, we need a revolution.

I took a fascinating history course in college. We would examine different political movements and see if they were revolutions or not. Many events that are called revolutions weren’t revolutions at all. The American Revolution, for example – many scholars believe it was simply a transfer of power from the elite classes in Britain to the elite classes in the former colonies. The difference between a revolution and a simple transfer of power is that true change takes place. Dictatorship gives way to democracy. Power goes to the people.

This year, don’t make the same old resolutions and trust in your own resolve. Put your trust in Jesus. In conquering death on the cross, he brought about the greatest revolution of all time. It wasn’t just a change in government. It was a change in people’s hearts. He didn’t just bring about a new way of life, he gave us life itself. Let Jesus start a revolution in your life from the inside out.
