“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” ~ James 1:17
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Decorations are being pulled out of the attic and placed proudly on people’s homes. Carols are being played on the radio. Wish lists are being made, and shoppers are beginning to stake out the good parking spaces.
For some, Christmas is a time for debating. When is it too early to play Christmas music on the radio? Should we say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? And isn’t all this shopping getting a little out of hand?
One of my favorite Christmas verses is Isaiah 9:6. The coming Messiah is foretold, along with a list of names he will be called. One of those names is Everlasting Father. I am reminded of James 1:17, when God is called the “father of lights” who gives every good and perfect gift.
Everything that makes this time of year special, whether it be giving gifts, singing songs, or celebrating with friends and family, comes from Jesus. The peace, hope, love, and joy of Christmas all come from Christ himself. Rather than turning the birth of Jesus into another argument, I believe it is our job as Christians to gently remind those around us that everything we love about the season comes from the little baby who will one day be called Everlasting Father.
Because of Jesus, it really is the most wonderful time of the year.
